Pastor Nathan Receives “Silent Hero” Award

Last Saturday, I accompanied Pastor Nathan at Lorain County Community College for the 35th Annual Founder’s Day Luncheon of the Lorain County Section of the National Council of Negro Women, Inc. He was one of five religious leaders presented the organization’s “Silent Heroes” award for community care during the pandemic, specifically in relation to the concerns of women and persons of color. I found it a most exciting and inspirational event.

On Saturday, I arrived about 30 minutes early and went inside to meet some of the guests. At the registration table, I gave my name and mentioned I was attending with Pastor Nathan. One of the two women there turned to me, extended her hand, and said, “I’m Regina; I spoke with you on the phone!” She guided me to the front of the room where there were several tables with empty seats. I received greetings from a number of women along the way. Before Regina returned to the registration table, I remarked, “What a lovely greeting!” and she gave me a hug.

While waiting for the event to begin, I met Bessie Nelson, a direct descendant of Pearletha Nelson, one of the original founders of the NCNW. She is in her 80s and is full of vitality and spunk. In addition to her participation in various NCNW activities, she promotes a pre-March program for the annual March on Washington.

The souvenir program book contained details about the honorees and the day’s guest speaker, Yvonka Hall, Executive Director of the Northeast Ohio Black Health Coalition. When it was time for Pastor Nathan to accept his award, he gave an enthusiastic “thank you” for five minutes, which prompted “Alleluia!” and “Amen!” from the attendees. I could hardly contain my delight in sharing this moment.

I was humbled and honored to hear about the dedication the women of this organization demonstrate and the stories of those honored that afternoon. Ms. Hall talked about setting the table of destiny for ourselves and others and applying perseverance through purpose. This Council includes many strong women who are friendly, funny, and fierce. The entire experience was uplifting. One of them said, “Wake up and see a day we’ve never seen before.” I have to tell you, I certainly did!
