A Word about Laity Sunday
We’re in the time of “the bleak midwinter”—the period after the gift-giving of Christmas and Epiphany, but before Lent. At Washington Avenue Christian Church, whether our pastor is in residence or out of town, this is the time we traditionally observe Laity Sunday.
Laity Sunday is the time each year when several of our folks with a “pew view” get to prepare a worship service and share themselves with one another. And that is a special gift in itself: people who are willing to trade the safety and comfort of the pew to help lead a service of worship for the WACC community. Through the efforts of members of the Worship Committee, a service is created and peopled with persons from the congregation to bring a message from the people of God, for the people of God.
Another gift is the evidence of our shared ministry. For it is not only those who step out of their seats to speak who create worship, but also those who come to listen to the thoughts shared by their peers who make a laity service sacred. This is the gift of community.
This laity Sunday we will be prompted to see that how we live our lives can be worship of The Holy One, both in traditional forms and broader visions. Come share the pews, come share the views, come praise the Lord!
